PRESIDENT OF THE COURT APPEAL

 

The Right Honourable Datuk Seri Abu Bakar bin Jais was born on 27 June 1962 in Muar, Johor. His Lordship graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree from the University of Malaya in 1986. His Lordship further acquired a Government Legal Advisers Course Certificate from the University of London in 1996.

His Lordship’s legal career began in academia as a tutor at the Faculty of Law, International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM), from 1986 to 1987. His Lordship then joined the public service as a Deputy Public Prosecutor at the Attorney General’s Chambers from 1987 to 1990, before being appointed as a Magistrate at the Magistrate’s Court in Ipoh in 1990.

From 1991 to 1992, His Lordship served as an Assistant Director at the Legal Aid Bureau and subsequently as a Deputy Public Prosecutor at the State Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office in Melaka. His Lordship’s legal career was further advanced as a Federal Counsel and Senior Federal Counsel in the Legal Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers from 1992 to 2000.

His Lordship then transitioned into the private sector as a partner in leading Malaysian law firms, including Messrs Zaid Ibrahim & Co from 2001 to 2003 and Messrs Hisham, Sobri & Kadir from 2004 to 2013.

On 8 July 2013, His Lordship was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner in the Commercial Division of the Kuala Lumpur High Court. His Lordship later served as a High Court Judge in the Commercial and Civil Divisions of the Kuala Lumpur High Court from 2016 to 2017. His Lordship also presided as a High Court Judge in Seremban from 2017 to 2018 and the Kuala Lumpur High Court from 2018 to 2019.

On 2 December 2019, His Lordship was elevated to the Court of Appeal and later appointed as a Federal Court Judge on 13 June 2023. His Lordship’s judicial career ascent on 28 July 2025, when His Lordship was officially appointed as the President of the Court of Appeal.

In recognition of His Lordship’s contributions to the nation, His Lordship was conferred the Ahli Mangku Negara (A.M.N.) by His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 1998. On 14 January 2018, His Lordship received the Darjah Dato' Paduka Negeri Sembilan (D.P.N.S.) in conjunction with the 70th Birthday Celebration of His Royal Highness the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir. His Lordship is married to YBhg. Datin Rusidah binti Muhammad, and they are blessed with one child.
