DATUK SERI UTAMA WAN AHMAD FARID BIN WAN SALLEH

CHIEF JUSTICE

The Right Honourable Datuk Seri Utama Wan Ahmad Farid bin Wan Salleh was born on 13 November 1962 in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu. Justice Wan Ahmad Farid bin Wan Salleh obtained his LLB degree from the University of West London in 1985 and the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) in 1986.

 

Justice Wan Ahmad Farid bin Wan Salleh holds the unique distinction of being the only Malaysian to date to have served in all three branches of government.

 

His Lordship was a member of the Senate in 2005 and served as Deputy Minister in 2008 before joining the Bench in 2015. When His Lordship was the political secretary to the then Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Badawi, he was part of the team that advised the government in the abolishment of the Internal Security Act 1960. The Act was eventually repealed in 2012.

 

His Lordship was admitted to the Malaysian Bar on 6 September 1987. Prior to his elevation to the Bench, he practised law in Terengganu and Kuala Lumpur. He began his judicial career as a Judicial Commissioner on 16 December 2015, and was confirmed as a High Court Judge on 8 August 2019. He was elevated to the Court of Appeal on 12 November 2024 and was appointed Chief Justice of Malaysia on 28 July 2025. 

 

His Lordship was conferred with Pingat Dato’ Paduka Mahkota Terengganu (D.P.M.T) in 1996 carrying the title Dato’ and in 2025, Pingat Darjah Kebesaran Setia Mahkota Kelantan Yang Amat Terbilang (S.P.S.K) also carrying the title Dato’. In 2025, His Lordship was conferred with Pingat Datuk Seri Utama Negeri Melaka (D.U.N.M) carrying the title Datuk Seri Utama.
