DATUK HAJAH AZIZAH BINTI HAJI NAWAWI
CHIEF JUDGE OF THE HIGH COURT OF SABAH AND SARAWAK
The Right Honourable Datuk Hajah Azizah binti Haji Nawawi was born on 9 January 1962 in Sibu, Sarawak. Her Ladyship earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from Otago University, New Zealand, in 1986. In the same year, Her Ladyship was admitted as a Barrister & Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and, in 1987, as a Barrister & Solicitor of the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak.
Her Ladyship began her legal career in private practice as an Advocate & Solicitor with Messrs. Daud Ismail & Co. in Limbang, Sarawak. She then entered the Malaysian Judicial and Legal Service, holding various roles including Magistrate of the Magistrates' Courts in Kuching and Miri, and later Senior Assistant Registrar of the High Court in Kuching.
Her Ladyship served with distinction at the Attorney General’s Chambers, holding key positions such as Senior Federal Counsel, Head of the Constitutional & Administrative Law Unit, Deputy Head of Civil Division I and II, and ultimately Head of the Civil Division.
On 1 November 2012, Her Ladyship was appointed Judicial Commissioner of the High Court of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. Her Ladyship was elevated to Judge of the High Court on 12 September 2014, serving in Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam. On 8 August 2019, Her Ladyship was appointed Judge of the Court of Appeal of Malaysia.
On 1.2.2018, Her Ladyship was conferred the Panglima Mahkota Wilayah (P.M.W), which carries the honorific title “Datuk,” by DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Her Ladyship’s distinguished career entered a defining chapter on 28 July 2025 when she was elevated to the Federal Court of Malaysia and sworn in as the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, becoming the first woman to hold this esteemed position.
Her Ladyship is married to YBhg. Dato’ Setia Haji Nik Suhaimi bin Nik Sulaiman and is blessed with three sons.
